Hi,Lance and everyone.
Tim here. Great reading all the Great advise and tips. I am a relative begginer. Iam working on my first as I write this.Gonna try a Reso on the next cause I love Resonators and play slide.I am so exited to hear theres gonna be forum for Resos. I was at ASIA and took the Paul Beard Reso class.Now They were great sounding resos he had.Thanks Lance and Don.

Hey Tim! I was there too! It was a great class. I got some really great insites into his thinking and where he's taking the art of spinning the cones. Very cool stuff.

I missed the class, I was too busy setting up my reso guitar for stephen that morning, not to mention trying to recover from the all night jam in my dorm room.

Hey Don as luck would have it,I developed a buzz on the D string about 2 weeks after I got back. well sounds like the cone buzzing, maybe a bit of fuzz or lint got down there when I was changing strings.I just found that Ironic.It never buzzed until went to that class.Hope its not a hint about starting to build them ....naw just another oppurtunity This will be a great new forum niche.

Timely. I have spent about a month with my CAD program working on a wood reso bass, reso roundneck, and a tricone. I find tricone information difficult to find. Somewhere on the WEB, Don Williams and tricones were connected, but I could find nothing when I followed up. How about it Don, are you the SOURCE when it comes to tricones?Ron Shriver38595.8752314815

I have built "tricone" out of solid black Walnut.
The cones ,coverplate, and tailpiece I acquired from the London Resonator Center.
The screens on the upper bout are made of brass , I tried to buy some frone Fine Resophonics but ended up cutting them with peircing saws and nickle plating them myself.
The sound well is laminated maple with a brass bottom.
The guitar has more sustain than the wooden single cones I have built.
I think there is quite a bit more work making a tricone.

Ron, I've never built a tri-cone, but my country-singer counterpart may have played one?????

Beard sells the parts I believe, if not National will sell them to you.

Does Beard sold the spider? I bought all of my hardware on ebay. I may try to make wood "screens" similar to the metal tricones.Ron Shriver38597.7205324074

Not sure. National does, Beard might, but you would have to call to find out. You could cast you own....

Would someone talk about the history of the Reso, the different types and why they are good and bad, and what for what types of music are they usually played.
Also differences between reso and dobro. I love the sound of the dobro compared to the petal steel.

Bob, For some good reading on the Dobro guitar you can check out www.resoguit.com , scroll down amd find Randy Getz' articles.

The Dobro,invented in the U.S.A. in the mid 20s, is a resonator guitar or reso as some call it. But because Dobro is a trademark belonging to Gibson, builders can't call their resonator guitars dobros

I see you guys are talking about hardware . If you spend the time to build a quality box ,...do it justice by arming it with quality cones, spider,and covered brass hardware .

If you buy the cheap guts and hardware ,.... your guitar will not be all it can be .

Except that, bizarrely, removing the US-made soundhole screens makes a bigger improvement to the tone and volume on some dobros than removing the import soundhole screens does. I was always sceptical about this until I tried it on one particular guitar with a tone problem last week. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that the diameters are different and the US screens use heavier gauge wire.

I agree about the cones and spiders, though - we all know that the import cones are rubbish, but the spiders make a difference too.

I agree that the American made hardware is better, but despite following all of the leads I could muster, I could not find a source for the tricone bridge or faceplate. I searched the London Resonator Center, Beard, National and anything else I could find without success. I may get upgraded cones from Beard but would welcome any suggestions.

Paul Beard sells tricone T-bridges - there's a lot more stuff in his catalogue than he shows on the website. If National won't sell you a tricone coverplate then try www.resound.uk.com/Accessories/index.html
